WHAT YOU SAY CAN PRESERVE LIFE OR DESTROY IT

1429037426571_calvin-arguing_largeCAN YOU ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR WORDS?

IN A RECENT ARGUMENT WITH MY COUSIN, OVER THE FACT THAT HE KEEPS BULLYING MY LITTLE COUSIN, I REALIZED THE POWER THAT WORDS HAVE ON US. WE OFTEN GET INTO ARGUMENTS WITH PEOPLE NEAR AND DEAR TO OUR HEARTS AND IN THAT MOMENT WE SHARE WORDS THAT HAS THE ABILITY TO DESTROY LIFE AS WE KNOW IT.

HOW DO YOU REACT TO SOMEONE UTTERING WORDS THAT CAUSES YOUR HEART TO DETERIORATE AS IT IS UTTERED?

DO YOU WALK AWAY AND BREATHE OR DO YOU RETALIATE?

I RETREATED TO MY ROOM…

I KNEW THAT I HAD TO GET AWAY TO BREATHE BEFORE I DONE SOMETHING THAT I’D REGRET LATER. I HAVE A HABIT OF DOING THAT SOMETIMES. I GOT INTO MY ROOM AND STOOD DEAD STILL IN FRONT  THE MIRROR, STARING AT MY REFLECTION AND DOING MY HAIR JUST TO QUIET ALL THAT HE WAS SAYING…BUT IT STARTED PLAYING IN MY MIND, OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

I FOUND MYSELF BACK IN THE PASSAGE, WHERE THE ARGUMENT ORIGINATED.

I TRIED TO CONTAIN IT BUT IT HAD TO COME OUT, EACH AND EVERY EMOTION WAS FORCING MY LIPS TO PART AND SPEAK ALL THAT MY MIND WAS FEEDING MY HEART. IN THAT MOMENT I FELT THAT I HAD TO DEFEND MYSELF LIKE MY LIFE DEPENDED ON IT AND WHAT WAS THE CONSEQUENCES? OUR WORDS DESTROYED US, OUR WORDS BROKE BOTH OF US. WE COULD HAVE PRESERVED LIFE BY WITHDRAWING BUT WE HAD TO BE RIGHT, RIGHT?

AFTER IT’S ALL SAID AND DONE, I WAS LEFT TO PICK UP THE PIECES AND MEND IT. I MADE PEACE WITH HIM BUT HIS MOM REMAINS ANGRY AT ME. SHE BLAMES ME FOR HIM MOVING OUT.

SO MY ADVICE TO YOU, WALK AWAY, FAR AWAY. PRESERVE LIFE, PRESERVE FAMILY, PRESERVE RELATIONSHIPS. FROM MY WORLD TO YOURS, IT’S GOODBYE FOR NOW.
